Audition FAQ
Who can audition for Luna?
Any and all Cal Poly students who will be enrolled in Fall 2025 are encouraged to audition. Auditioning in person is preferred. However, if you need to be away from campus on September 18-19, see below for “virtual” auditions.
Preparing for Auditions on Thursday, September 18
- Read the play in advance: Luna by Ramón Esquivel. You can download a copy off the website or read a hard copy that is available for checkout in the Theatre & Dance department office.
- Prepare a 1-2 minute comedic monologue. I recommend something from a contemporary or Modern play (1945-Present). It can be grounded in Realism or Fantasy, and can feature informal, lyrical, or poetic language.
- Your monologue can be from a play for young audiences, but that is not required.
- Alternatively, prepare a 1-2 minute monologue for one of the characters in Luna. Some monologues from the play will be attached to this audition form.
- Complete the Audition Form, including potential conflicts with rehearsals and performances.
How can I virtually audition?
- Please record a video of yourself performing your monologue. (See recommendations for monologue above.)
- Upload your video to YouTube, Vimeo, Wistia, Dailymotion, or other video hosting site. Those on campus can also upload to SharePoint /One Drive linked to a Cal Poly account. Please do NOT use Google Drive.
- EMAIL this Audition Form and a working link to your uploaded video — along with any passwords that you may put on it — to our stage manager, Claire Lawson: clawso03@calpoly.edu. Please email your material by 7:00 pm Pacific on Thursday, September 18.
- If called back, you will be emailed with further instructions on how to turn in callback materials virtually. Due date for turning in virtual auditions will be 7:00 pm Pacific, Friday, September 19.
Recommendations
- Read Luna script! Copies will be available in the main office of the Theatre and Dance department, Room 103 / Building 45 (Davidson Music Building)
- The Callback will emphasize physical movement. Those called back will be asked to tell a one-minute story (with a beginning, middle, and end) using only physical gestures and facial expressions; no words.
