Professional Workshop Series (17-18)

Each year the Department provides a number of workshop opportunities for students (Majors & Minors). Professionals from various disciplines work with the students in a small classroom setting. 

THEATRE

Commedia dell'arte — the foundations of Western Comedy. Facilitated by Gale McNeeley. Saturday, October 7th from 1:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M.

This workshop will introduce actors to... the Archetypes of Western Comedy in the characters of the Commedia dell’Arte; the effective use of the masks of the Zanni, Old People, Lovers, and Captains; the physicality of each character and the function each plays; the relationships between the characters through a series of improvisations; the development of scenes, complete with slapstick lazzi, based on scenarios.

Gale McNeeley is a graduate of the Neighborhood Playhouse, the Dell’Arte International School of Physical Theatre and Scuola Internazionale Dell’Attore Comico. Mr. McNeeley has appeared on Broadway, TV and Film, in Circus, Street Theatre and Cabaret. He currently tours the globe with his one-man show, “Archy and Mehitabel.” Gale has taught Commedia dell’ Arte and Theatre Clown in America and Europe for 40 years.
